Salt Spring Island with a population of 9000, is the largest of
the Gulf Islands, and is located close to Vancouver Island. Three
ferry ports connect Salt Spring Island with Vancouver Island and
the BC mainland. The island is scattered with small farms and
in many places is heavily wooded. It's mild Mediterranean climate
tends to be dry and cool. Lying in the rain shadow of the Vancouver
Island mountains, annual precipitation is only about 84 cm.
With it's Sunshine and scenery, Salt Spring Island is an artist's
paradise and there are many galleries and craft studios. The Island
has a strong and lively sense of community. There are many activities
on the island, highlighted by the 'Round the Island' yacht race
in the Spring, and the Fall Fair at the end of the Summer. Live
entertainment and local theatre can by enjoyed year round. The
island also provides schooling for other Gulf Islands, and has
one of the most highly rated little hospitals in Canada.
